He had established a massive empire in construction business called Martin & Company. Martin & Company later merged with Burn & Company to form Martin Burn & Company. He also forayed into iron and steel and established Indian Iron and Steel Company. Martin Burn Railways was also his venture into railroads. His son Sir Biren Mookerjee took his companies to even greater heights before the entire empire came crashing down in 1960s mainly due to labour unrest in West Bengal. Now all that remains of this famous dynasty is the name of the flagship firm on numerous small and large railway bridges across the country
