Super Cassettes Industries Ltd sues Google

YouTube and its parent company Google have on their website been showing videos of SCIL’s (Super Cassettes Industries Ltd) copyrighted songs without SCIL’s license or permission. On November 5,2007 the Honourable High Court of Delhi after hearing counsel of SCIL issued notice and summons against YouTube and Google because of rank infringement of its copyright in music by them and passed an interim order restraining YouTube and Google from reproducing, adapting, distributing, communicating, transmitting, disseminating or displaying on their websites or otherwise infringing in any manner any audio visual work in which SCIL owns exclusive rights and subsisting copyrights. By this order the Honourable High Court of Delhi has granted an injunction against the business practices of YouTube of earning profits at the expense of copyright owner. YouTube and Google display ads while playing SCIL’s songs for free to public and thus earn revenue at the expense of SCIL. The profits from this business model, which is based on copyright infringement, are enormous as indicated by the fact that Google paid $1.65 billion in stock to acquire YouTube.
