Hindustan Unilever Limited becomes the first Unilever business worldwide to get CERs

A carbon reduction supply chain project has enabled Hindustan Unilever Limited to become the first Unilever business worldwide to be awarded carbon credits under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) scheme operational by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The project is associated with the development of a new process of making soap known as Ploughshare Technology. It took four years for Hindustan Unilever Limited to develop it and is now used across it’s eight plants in India. The technology eliminates the use of steam conventionally required for soap making. Ploughshare Technology, patented by Hindustan Unilever Limited, cuts carbon emissions by 15,000 tonnes a year. Hindustan Unilever Limited soap project has been externally verified and registered under the CDM scheme and awarded 15,000 carbon credits. Hindustan Unilever Limited has been granted Certified Emission Reductions ( CER) on August 31, 2007 for a period of ten years. Hindustan Unilever Limited will earn an income of around Rs. 10 million per annum from these CERs
