Khatau Makanji founded the Khatau Makanji Spinning and Weaving Company in 1874 and went on to become the largest textile companies in Bombay and the first textile firm to set up its own retail outlets. The textile business of Khataus survived three generations and as late as 1967 , it opened a stae of art mill at Borivili in Bombay.
